 | Play Up, Corinth
Corinthian Football Club was formed in 1882 purely to support a declining England national team. This was a group of men from a different era who played football at the highest level, beating all the top British teams of the day, whilst maintaining a strict amateur ethos and high levels of sportsmanship. These toffs also had the spare time to jaunt round the world; their first overseas tour in 1897 (indeed the first of any club outside Europe) was to South Africa. Should England qualify for the 2010 World Cup the differences between the two sets of players are unimaginable .In between times they took football to Brazil, North America, Europe and Jamaica. They made such a profound impact in Brazil that Brazil's biggest current football club is named after them, in honour of their visit. Real Madrid copied their famous white strip and they also played and beat the Barbarians at Rugby!
What an enjoyable read. This quality paperback combines a depth of statistics on the Corinthian Football Club that would keep John Motson happy with a detailed historical tale of what football used to be like before professionalism entered the game.
Thoroughly recommended.
